HOW A PRINT IS MADE

Three stages, each its own kind of waiting

HARVEST

Leaves are gathered based on what's available each season, chosen for size, texture, and how they'll hold contrast. Elephant ear leaves are a favorite for their broad surface and bold veining.

Choosing the leaf

EXPOSE

A high-contrast negative is placed over the leaf and left in direct sunlight. Light bleaches the exposed chlorophyll, slowly revealing the image underneath.

Hours or days in the sun

PRESERVE

Once developed, the leaf goes through a copper sulfate bath to set the color, then gets pressed flat, sealed in wax, and framed for lasting display
